The Power of Autoblogging: WordPress and RSS Feeds using WP-o-Matic
Posted on September 14th, 2007 17 commentsAutoblogging with WordPress
Facibus has a nice write up on “autoblogging” (automatic posting to blogs via an RSS feed). You can see it here. The issues Facibus was having have been fixed in the latest version and you should give it a try.
I have been playing with WP-o-Matic for some recent projects- &chicks and Web Camera Review are just a few examples. The big advantage is you can build a site with a TON of information in a matter of minutes.
The software is still beta and has a few issues but you should be able to work around them.
First, the CRON function that make it automatic requires Unix CRON and I don’t have access. So I go to my web site and update everyday or so. This isn’t a huge issue because it can pull so much data in so quickly.
It would be nice to see the CRON functionality incorporated into the WP-CRON or internal WordPress CRON.
Second, the image caching (under Options) has been giving me problems so I turn that off and things work much better. Especially when posting videos. Yes, it will work with videos from RSS feeds (more on this in a later post).
RSS Content Sources
Here are a fee RSS content sources that you can test with to build up new Niche sites.
Ezine Articles - RSS Feed - there is a TON of info in here for Niche Site. Take a look!
IdeaMarketers charges $9.95 a month for access to their library in RSS.
ArticleFever has a feed of their latest articles published.
The News Room - This has 175 News sources and they say you can use the news on your site. Worth looking into.
Syndic8 - more feeds than you can imagine, but get permission before you use them.
These are just a few sources. Try doing a search on “rss feed syndicate” and you will find many more.
Has anyone else got some good tips or sources? Post them in the comments, please.

Hi,
thanks for the link and that is good news about wp-o-matic
I kept tabs on Guillermo’s site for a while and then it slipped my mind… bring on the autoblogs
PS: this is a good blog - I’ve signed up for notification of when your ebook is ready - it is a fascinating topic and I am looking forward to reading it.
Best regards, Andrew

[...] guys at Chimp-Simple Publishing linked to my article on the WP-o-Matic plugin to let their readers know that there is a new version [...]

Andrew: Thanks for the feedback. I have been spending most of my time writing the book so my postings have been limited.
Also, FeedWordPress - http://projects.radgeek.com/feedwordpress
is being updated again. I have used this in the past and it works well with autobloggin Google video feeds. Give it a try too.S

That’s nifty. Now I can make the project I was thinking about.
-
Jenny, give it a try. I helps me to keep focused on one topic.
Also, drop us a line when you have the new project done so we can take a look at it.
Good Luck,

How are you getting it to link to the original article? I am trying to do this on Birdiewhackers.com for the news feed and I can’t get it to work. The author of the plugin says this:
FAQ
How do I link to the original site/article?
Use the post template feature (example: {content} Link to the original site)
I don’t have just a post template, like post.php on this theme, but I tried it on the single post template. I can insert it on each template that uses the post… the problem is I don’t know how to get it to grab the correct permalink to insert.
Since your two sites seem to be working well, I thought maybe you could give me some pointers.
Thanks.

Is there any way of “autoblogging”, if a source website is not giving RSS feeds? I have the legal permission to copy the content but its a huge work if done manually.
Please reply.

wow !!
its very unconventional point of view.
Nice post.
realy gjthank you

@harry, you can search google for programs to convert web pages to rss - try searching “webpage to rss” and you should find a lot of programs. I have had mixed results with these types of programs, though.
Also, you can have them add you as a syndicated link in wordpress.

@Head Birdie Whacker, sorry for the slow response. I missed this comment.
Here is how you set it up. Login to WordPress as Admin, Go to Options, WP-o-Matic and then select the Campaign you want to Edit.
Next select Opitions for that Campaign. Click the Custom post template box. This will open the template window.
In here add the tags you want. Here is one I use for videos:
< a href={permalink}>Watch the Video< / a >
{content}You can put whatever text you want in the link. Take the spaces out of this anchor tags so it will work (I had to do this to get it to display and not link in this comment).
Enjoy,

Fun. Add to your bookmarks. And how long it took to write articles?
-
Been using it a few days and seeing some traffic coming to my acai berry site.

hey, nice post , but i am looking to use wp-o-matic with full content rss feed will be very nice if you can post on that thanks.
-
when I try to load this rss I load all the data, it only charged me a few lines, any ideas?
the rss is
http://feeds.feedburner.com/SAPNetworkWeblogsthank you
-
It will only load the data in the feed. Most feeds are limited to the first few lines.
-
I was only able to setup feeds using .rss as the file type. Feedburner links cause the Add Campaign - Submit process to leave me with a blank result page. Going back in to settings shows the newly created campaign BUT the title/rss part of it blank.
